Children learn the most from the person with whom they have the strongest bond. Your level of participation will model for them how to participate in a group music setting.
What to do as a parent/ caregiver:
Sit in the circle and follow the teacher’s cues.
Sing along with the songs as best you can. You are welcome to add harmony or funny sounds, silly actions, whatever!
Do the movements encouraged by the teacher.
Don’t talk during songs.
Remember that your child learns by watching YOU, not the teacher. So be a good model at all times.
Encourage your child to participate and love music by modeling your own enthusiasm for music.
The class can be tiring, if you are carrying a child the whole time. Do not feel pressured to do every activity. If you are tired, sit and just rock or sing along. The class should be fun for you and NOT stressful!!
Listen to the CD and music at home. Recreate class activities, or makeup your own!
What to expect from your child:
Not all children participate the same way. Some cling, some explore, some sit. Please be ok with your child’s natural response. Kids learn in different ways - kinesthetically, visually, aurally, etc.
Don’t force them to participate, sing, or dance. Please do not move their arms or make them play along. They will do so when they are ready. All children in the room are in the observation and absorption phase for several weeks so you might not see a huge reaction right away.
Many children will want to sit with their parent/caregiver as a safe place until they feel comfortable. Sometimes they are overwhelmed by the new experience and cry or stay very quiet in the beginning. This is normal. Please just show them everything is ok with your positive attitude. They may eventually warm up and branch out to join in with instruments in week 1 or they may take a few weeks to adjust.
Some older or more outgoing children do get very excited and animated and want to participate right away. Don’t compare your child to these children and do not expect all children to be exactly the same.
Some children just want to explore the room, the instruments, and touch everything. This is ok. You do not need to stop them. They are still absorbing the music and you will hear them singing it at home eventually!
Please do not feel that they must sit down and watch the teacher. Other than keeping them safe, you do not need to stop them from moving around, exploring.
Classroom Policies
Photos: Because the children look so adorable in this musical setting, class pictures will be allowed before and after class only. The teacher will have props out before class to get pictures with your child each week.
Once class begins, please refrain from taking pictures during class. Taking photos distracts both you and your child from the music and takes you out of your role as a model into an observer.
Adult Guests: All adult caregivers are welcome. You can bring grandparents, nannies etc. If there will be a whole crew, please let the teacher know in advance, if possible. Also please let us know if any of your guests need accommodations (for ex. a chair). Guests are expected to participate in the class whenever possible. This eliminates the feeling of “being watched” for the attending families.
Child Guests: Children (ages 0-10) attending class will be charged a$18 Drop In Fee. All attending children (regardless of age) are expected to participate and may not sit on the side and "just watch". There is a maximum of 3 drop-ins allowed per semester. You can purchase these on the website, or pay in cash or check (Apple Pay and Venmo are also accepted) during class.
Please notify the director in advance of any child guests attending class.
Missed Classes: If you need to miss a class, please let the director know in advance if at all possible. You tuition will not be refunded for missed classes. However, there are TWO Friends and Family Day classes scheduled in between the Winter and Spring semesters that can be used as makeup days for those that need them. Once the center grows, and more classes are offered, makeup classes will be available in other classes.
Cancellations: In the event of inclement weather, class will be cancelled. You will be notified via email, phone, and Facebook announcements. Makeup days will be added to the term for any cancelled classes. Illness: If your child is sick, please keep them home. As per the DHS regulations, keep your child home if your child:
temperature of 100 or more; please be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication (such as Tylenol or aspirin)
conjunctivitis (pink eye)
impetigo or other contagious skin rashes
diarrhea
vomiting
severe cold with fever, sneezing and nose drainage
any contagious disease
seems really sick without obvious symptoms.
Since we share instruments and many props, it is important that for all families to feel safe in class! If possible, please let the director know in advance if you will miss class.
In class:
Please be very diligent and watch for any instruments that go in childrens' mouths in class and put them in the "wet bucket". These instruments are disinfected between classes.
Please wash your hands carefully after you change a diaper.
Clean your children's hands before and after class. Wet wipes are available if needed.
Facilities: The restroom is just next to the classroom. There is no changing table, but there is a portable changing mat for you to use if needed. It is located in the bathroom for your convenience. If it is too uncomfortable for you to use it in the bathroom (on the floor), you may use it on the floor in the dance studio next to us. Please just return it to the bathroom after use.
