Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does my child learn music?

Did you know that your child was born musical? It's true! Your little one can learn to dance and sing just as naturally as they learn to walk and talk.

Research suggests that music is learned similarly to how
language is learned. Young children need immersion in extensive amounts of language before they actually learn to think, speak, read, or write a language. Similarly, in the early years, a high-quality immersion in music is essential for children to develop to their innate potential.

STAGE 1: Listening to and absorbing a wide variety of music
(just like language development, this stage can take many years and is an important foundational step)
STAGE 2: Experimenting with movement and sound
(babbling stage- movements might look erratic and sounds may be seen as random)
STAGE 3: Moving to music on the beat and playing rhythms on instruments
(this stage can go concurrently with other Steps)
STAGE 4: Singing along to music
(not always on correct pitch- finding the singing voice takes time and practice)
STAGE 5: Singing on pitch and moving in correct rhythm
(with proper music education and exposure, this  stage is usually reached by the age of 4 or 5)

Progressing through these stages takes many years, (just like learning a language!) which is why the Music Together® program is designed to continue through your child's developmental years birth - age 5!

What ages is Music Together® geared towards?
Music Together is educationally appropriate for children from birth to age 5, and it is designed to be a long term curriculum for the children to take from birth right up to school-age. The Music Together song cycle spans over three years before it repeats, and so even if your child takes the classes for four or five years and repeats song cycles, they will be experiencing the music at a completely different level the second time around than how they experienced it when they were babies.

Isn't my baby too young for music lessons?!

Music lessons, yes. But Music Together is different than music lessons. Music Together is an immersive music class that is NON-PERFORMANCE ORIENTED. This means your child is learning to absorb and "speak" the language of music just as they are learning to walk and talk!

Every child's development benefits from early exposure to music and to feeling movement through you, the parent! Nothing stimulates your baby's rapidly growing brain like music & movement!

Making music is a profoundly satisfying way to interact with, bond with & soothe your baby, who is at the stage of absorbing tons of information through all her senses.

The earlier you start your baby in Music Together classes, the more development you will be able to witness - from language to fine & gross motor skills to making social interactions.

Why does my child's teacher do tonal and rhythm patterns in class?
Tonal and rhythm pattern instruction is an integral part of musical development.  Pattern instruction, similar to learning the vocabulary of a language, offers many benefits. Pattern instruction is tailored for each class to encourage maximum musical growth at every child's level.  Not all children (especially babies) will respond verbally, but over time, as they absorb and begin to understand tonality, they will verbalize in class or at home.

What are the benefits of Music Together?
Children who are exposed to a quality music education at an early age experience numerous benefits including cognitive, language, social, emotional, and physical! Music Together immerses your child in a rich music environment that supports their overall development!

You can find a wealth of detailed information and research articles, specific to age and level of development, on the Music Together Worldwide homepage!
